Proper letting agencies
And so after our tenancy ran out on our old place on the 26th of March, today we got our deposit back without any prompting whatsoever, hooray :P

Yours was a little quicker than mine. Andrews sent me two cheques on Saturday morning (the day I had chosen to go and hastle them anyway). I am guessing their computer system was waiting for the end of the month after one month after my tennancy ended (end of month for processing, one month after end of tennancy for assessment of any damages). Either way I now have at least my money back plus a cheque for the other half.
